Helmet mask, Orokolo culture

The mask depicts a female sea spirit. It was worn during a large ritual cycle in which the initiation of boys played an important role. The masks had clan symbols on them. The bow on the mask possibly depicts a snake. The mask was worn with a long coat made of reed fibres.
